Unfortunately, given what’s happening in the country at the moment with Covid-19, and the advice I’ve had from a number of sources, it’s pretty clear that I need to cancel our meetings until further notice.
I know this will come as a blow to a lot of our members, but I have to take our safety and the safety of the wider population seriously in this unprecedented (and very, very strange) time.
BUT THERE’S GOOD NEWS TOO! I have a solution so people can still cube together online!
I’m going to start a regular live streamed competition through the speedcube.co.nz Instagram starting this Sunday at 1pm. I plan to make this a weekly thing, childcare dependant!
In a nutshell, people will be able to join me on a livestream for a 1 scramble, one solve style contest, with the event changing each week but always focussing on the faster events. Each week I’ll populate a scoreboard and the results will be published on a website, which at the time of writing is still a work in progress!
As well as this, my 10 week Youtube series “Average of 5 Fridays” begins on April 3rd on the Speedcube.co.nz Youtube channel. If you (or the young cuber you look after) don’t have Instagram or you’re not happy with them joining a livestream, then this might be a better option.
Obviously these will be open to anyone and not just club members, but nonetheless there are options there for community cubing from the comfort of our own homes 🙂 It has always been a big part of my plan with speedcube.co.nz to create online content for our community, and the pandemic has only served to make me commit me to it even more seriously. I hope both of these initiatives will be successful and that people will enjoy them!
I know that other cubers in NZ are also investigating online options, so rest assured there will be plenty of options for our members during the club’s shutdown 🙂
So a bit of bad-news-good-news today. Stay safe, look after each other and don’t forget to wash your hands!
Thanks so much, I look forward to cubing with you all online soon 🙂
